The all-new Volvo XC60 not only succeeds a popular best-seller, it is also the culmination of Gothenburg’s 90 years of car-making expertise.

W‍‍‍

e all know safety as the bedrock of Volvo’s brand image. Less heralded, but no less true, is the brand’s legitimate claim to‍‍‍ being one of the most stylish car makers in the business.

Moving boxes such as the old 240 or 760 may not meet the definition of handsome cars to most people, but classics such as the P1800, the Amazon, and, more recently, the 850 T5-R live long in the memory as some of the best-looking cars ever built.

The was a slight dip in fortunes in the 1990s, but the last decade has witnessed something of a renaissance by Volvo, driven by design, yet underpinned by the brand’s age-old core value of safety.

The original XC60 has been a cornerstone of Volvo’s recent success; not only is it consistently the best-selling Volvo every year since 2009, it also never failed to find even more new customers to buy it the following year. Something, is obviously very right with this template.

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the all-new XC60 looks set to once again lead its segment, bringing class-leading safety to bear on the competition along with handsome good looks – both key elements to the original model’s success.

“We have a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic SUVs that offer the latest in technology. The new XC60 will be no exception. It’s the perfect car for an active lifestyle, and it represents the next step in our transformation plan.”

Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive, Volvo Car Group

Scandinavian Elegance, Further Refined

(1) Commanding presence, Swedish flair. The Volvo XC60 is the SUV with a unique Scandinavian attitude.‍‍‍

(2) The Volvo XC60 combines grace with power. A long bonnet, muscular wheel arches and short overhangs create a sense of refined strength.‍‍‍

(3) Distinctive T-shaped Th‍‍‍or’s Hammer LED headlights define the Volvo XC60 and give it a strong identity. Active High Beam means you always get the best view without dazzling other road users.

Although the new XC60 is a clean-slate redevelopment, influences from the successful predecessor understandably remain. The hardware beneath is all-new, but the silhouette is nevertheless a familiar one, quickly establishing the new car’s lineage.

The LED-illuminated Thor’s Hammer DRLs make for a distinctive fascia, first of many styling touches that immediately mark out the XC60’s credentials as a present-day Volvo. Other details to feast your eyes on include tail lights running along the D-pillar flowing into the tailgate – simultaneously identifying itself both with the predecessor and current-generation Volvo models.‍‍‍

Inside, Volvo’s latest cabin architecture first pioneered by the XC90 is further refined with more three-dimensional surfaces whilst retaining the overall sense of understated elegance and peerless craftsmanship that has come to define the brand’s latest interior offerings.

In Malaysia, the XC60 is offered with a choice of two model grades; the T5 in the elegant and unfussy Momentum trim, whilst the T8 Twin Engine is lined in the more upscale Inscription finish.‍‍‍

The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials, and the very latest technology – all perfectly blended together. Setting New Standards in Safety
… Once Again‍‍‍

(1) City Safety‍‍‍ identifies other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, ‍‍‍and large animals ahead of you, even at night. It warns you of any hazards and, if you don’t react, it will brake automatically to help avoid or mitigate a collision and can help you steer around obstacles on the road and avoid oncoming vehicles.

(2) Steering Support‍‍‍ ‍‍‍predicts if you are about to hit something. If you start to steer, but not enough, it will try to increase the steering, making rapid manoeuvres safer and more effective.

(3) ‍‍‍Oncoming Lane Mitigation‍‍‍ can help avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles by automatically steering the car out of the way.

(4) Run-off‍‍‍ Road Mitigation‍‍‍ steers and, if necessary, brakes to help prevent you leaving the road accidentally.

(5) Driver Alert Control‍‍‍ recognises if you’re tired or distrac‍‍‍ted and suggests that it’s time to take a break.

(6) Road Si‍‍‍gn‍‍‍ Information reminds you of the speed limit.

(7) Cross Traffic Al‍‍‍ert‍‍‍ technology helps you to reverse out of a space knowing that there are no vehicles about to collide with you. The technology can spot vehicles approaching from either side of your Volvo at a distance of up to 30 metres, while cyclists and pedestrians can be detected at even shorter distances.

(8) Blind Spot Information with S‍‍‍teer Assist‍‍‍ for increased awareness and confidence on the highway, alerting you of vehicles alongside you. If you don’t react to the warnings and drift into the path of another vehicle, Steer Assist will gently guide you back into your lane.

(9) Rear Collision Warning detects if another vehicle is about to ‍‍‍hit you from behind and flashes the hazard lights more quickly than usual. It also tenses up the safety belts.

“We’ve been working with collision avoidance systems for many years and we can see how effective they are. In Sweden alone, we have seen a decl‍‍‍ine of around 45 percent in rear-end frontal crashes thanks to our collision warning with autobrake system. With the XC60, we are determined to take the next step in reducing avoidable collisions with the addition of steering support and assistance systems”

Like the 90-series models above it, the all-new XC60 also benefits from the advances of plug-in hybrid powertrain technology in its T8 Twin Engine variant, that produces a combined system output of 407hp and 640Nm. Best part, even with a depleted battery, you still have 320hp at your disposal, enough to rip X3s and GLCs to shreds.

A fully in-house PHEV solution developed by Volvo, the T8 Twin Engine’s unique layout features a transverse-mounted four-cylinder petrol engine powering the front wheels working in tandem with an electric motor attached to the rear wheels. Battery is mounted right at the heart of the vehicle along the centre transmission tunnel. It is the most space-efficient hybrid solution currently available in the market.

According to Volvo, the XC90 T8 can travel without burning fuel for up to 45 km.

Hybrid’s not your thing? There’s also the T5 model using a far less complicated 2.0-litre turbo engine good for a still-impressive 254hp to drive the front wheels. With that promise to fully electrify its line-up by 2019, the XC60 T5 may well be one of the last Volvo Cars ever to be sold with a just a regular petrol engine.

Like its predecessor, the all-new Volvo XC60 breaks new ground in advanced safety. Where the original model pioneered autonomous braking in the segment, the new one ups the ante with three new advanced driver assistance features that take the initiative to steer you out of trouble in an emergency, thereby averting potential collisions.‍‍‍

The new XC60’s updated City Safety suite now includes steering support, which steps into situations when automatic braking alone would not help avoid a potential collision. Active from 50 to 100 km/h, the system provides steering assistance to help navigate around obstacles such as vehicles, pedestrians, and large animals, sparing you from an imminent collision.‍‍‍

Have the habit of wandering into the opposing lane? Here comes Oncoming Lane Mitigation, to your rescue which, at speeds from 60 to 140 km/h, will proactively steer you back into the correct lane and once again flow properly with traffic.

Lastly is the updated Blind Spot Information System, which not only alerts drivers to the presence of vehicles in their blind spot, but now incorporates a steer assist functionality that tugs the steering back when it detects a vehicle approaching you from a blind spot. Many motorcyclists will have this feature to be thankful for in the future, we’ll tell you that.‍‍‍

Once again, the XC60 is the safest car on the road, having achieved best overall performance in 2017 for Euro NCAP. It scored a near-perfect 98 percent for Adult Occupant protection and its 95 percent score for its Safety Assist features is a full 20 percentage points higher than the next nearest competitor in the Large Off-Road category.

The Sound of Beauty

Recognizing increasing demand from sound connoisseurs, the XC60 T8 Twin Engine can be optionally specified with a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.

Specially optimized for the cabin of the XC60, the 1,100W 15-speaker is said to offer near-lifelike sound quality for the aural pleasure of discerning listeners.
